The Maternity Unit at Epworth Freemasons opened in September 1991 and has since developed a reputation as one of Melbourne's finest maternity facilities.
The Unit is situated on the top floor Medical Centre in Victoria Parade, and on the first floor of our Clarendon Street site. Both sites have magnificent views of the surrounding parklands and the nearby city skyline.
The unit consists of:
- 9 fully-equipped Delivery Suites
- 48 luxuriously appointed single post-natal suites
- 4 shared post-natal suites
- 10 cot Special Care Nursery
Over 3,500 babies are delivered in the Maternity Unit each year, with future bookings ensuring the Unit operates at, or near capacity, year round.

Maternity Services

In addition to these services, The Maternity Unit operates a Day Breast Feeding Centre, which is available for breast-feeding mothers to come and receive advice and help from the Unit's many internationally qualified Lactation Consultants. The Centre is located at the Park Hyatt, suite 848.
Special Care Nursery
Our Maternity Unit has a ten cot high-dependency nursery for the care of ill and premature babies.
The nursery is staffed around the clock by highly-skilled nursing professionals who understand the intense feelings and anxieties of parents in these difficult and challenging times.
Our specialist staff will do their utmost to promote a return to health from the infants in their care. And whilst a happy outcome can never be guaranteed, we have seen innumerable tiny people make wonderful progress to the day of their exciting and often inspiring homecoming with their delighted parents.
Having Your Baby
Our birthing suites comprise nine well-equipped rooms overlooking tree-lined Victoria Parade. The latest technological support is blended discreetly into the decor of the room creating a harmonious, safe and personal environment.
For that extra measure of safety, a fully equipped operating theatre is nearby to deal with any complications.
Our Maternity Unit staff are all committed to providing you with informed choices in childbirth. And our expert team of midwives will provide you and your family with personalised care, advice and support, discussing with you the various choices and facilities available.
Meals may be ordered from the Catering service whilst your partner is in labour. Patients usually stay a few hours in the birthing suites following the birth of the bay before being transferred to the postnatal area. The baby remains with the parents unless transfer to the special care nursery is required.
